Overview
You received an app rejection error related to Apple's 4.2.2 Guideline - Minimum Functionality and more specifically about marketing your service. This article explains why your app might have got rejected and how you can work around it.
Diagnosis
You got the following message from Apple for your iOS app.
We noticed that your app’s main functionality is to market your service, with limited or no user-facing interactive features or functionality. Apps that are primarily marketing materials or advertisements are not appropriate for the App Store
This is due to Apple's 4.2 Guideline stating that your app should include features, content, and UI that elevates it beyond a repackaged website.
More specifically, it appears your app is primarily marketing materials, advertisements, web clippings, content aggregators, or a collection of links, which is against Guideline 4.2.2 and thus you got this rejection.
Solution
Since this is due to Apple's policy, we suggest you do the following bearing in mind that Apple apps cannot be solely marketing in nature, meaning the app cannot simply list your services or products. There must be a useful function to the app that compels users to revisit it often.
- Use iOS's native features. A list of features can be found in our Feature List For IOS, Android And PWA KB article. In this article, you can also see which features are known to aid in getting your iOS app approved and which no.
- Try to make your content as dynamic as possible avoiding too much static content (like PDFs etc). If you have to use static content, try to group it under one app feature (eg in Info-2-Tier and/or Info-3-Tier features)
- If the app has a specific audience, you can use the PAS platform to publish your iOS app and distribute it privately to the users you wish. This way your app will not have to go through the standard Apple Review process.
Testing
You will have managed to publish your iOS app avoiding get rejected due to the 4.2.2 Guideline.
