Overview
Screenshots are a crucial aspect of your app listings. You must select featured screenshots in the App Store or Google Play to give prospective users an idea of the functionality that your app contains. This article outlines some best practices you should have in mind when preparing these screenshots.
Solution
iOS Devices Dimensions
The dimensions of screenshots vary from device to device. The following table provides a few of the common screenshot dimensions for iOS devices. For a larger list, please refer to the iOS Device Display Summary.
Devices |
Dimensions |
iPhone 5 |
640x1136px |
iPhone 6 |
750x1334px |
iPhone 6 Plus |
1242x2208px |
Tablet |
1536x2048px |
In iOS, these screenshots are grabbed during the iOS upload process using the built-in screenshot tool and uploaded in the Publish step. Your screenshots must be as precise as you would like them when you publish your app because they cannot be changed without an update after the app goes live.
Screenshot Tools
Preview Apps
The simplest way to grab screenshots is to load the preview on your device and get the screenshots. Then, you can email them to yourself, or you can use a cloud storage service to transfer the screenshots.
Android
- Download Preview Your App from the Google Play.
- Open the app.
- Enter your app code in the Email field.
- Leave the Password field blank and click Load Demo.
- Once the app is loaded, browse through your app and take the screenshots.
iOS
- On the specific iOS device that screenshots are required from, use the Safari browser to open Preview App.
- Click Install Now.
- On your device, navigate to Settings > General > Device Management.
- Select Trust.
- Enter the App Code into the Email Address field.
- Leave the password field blank.
- Click Go.
- Once the app is loaded, take the screenshots.
Web Browser
You can also use your browser to take screenshots.
- Go to the Preview App simulator.
- Click on the Play button in the simulated device.
- Enter the App Code into the Email Address field.
- Leave the password field blank.
- Press Enter to load the app.
- Take screenshots.
Screenshot Tool
Under the Screen Shots section of the Publish step, click on the Take Screenshots button. Our screenshot tool takes three screenshots per device size for you.
If you have the Membership Feature enabled, uncheck the Require Login Credentials box before generating screenshots. Otherwise, the Screenshot Tool cannot pass the login screen.
Pop-Out Preview
The in-dashboard preview is also an easy way to take screenshots. However, like the Preview App simulator, it is third-party software. Thus, it is less reliable than the other options shared above.
Tips and Tricks
- Please review the Take a Screenshot page that provides instructions on taking screenshots with different devices and computers.
- On all iPhones and some Android phones, you can hold down the Home button and the Screen Lock button to take a screenshot. On other Android phones, the Volume Up button and the Home button are used.
- Apple requires three to five screenshots for every app listing in the iTunes app store. Utilize our screenshot generator and choose at least three 1080 x 1920 px images that highlight the best aspects of your app. A screenshot of the home screen, the More or Modern menu, and a specific tab are usually safe bets. Regardless of what you choose to include, make sure you are showing some functionality.
- Make sure that the screenshots are appropriate for all viewers (4+) even if the app has a higher rating.
- For iOS, do not upload screenshots taken from any other device than iOS devices. Apple rejects apps displaying other companies' products.
- Do not display content or functionality that is not currently in your app. If your screenshots look different than the app in use, Apple rejects your app. For that reason, it is best to create your screenshots after your app is complete.
